E-MERLIN

Lead1This video mas made during a residency at Cornerhouse, Manchester, in november 2003. It was part of the Microgravity Interdisciplary Research program (MIR) and under the invitation of The Arts Catalyst. I was based in the exhibition space to edit some of my videos made at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Center, Star City, Russia. Including my zero-gravity training flight.

During the period, I visited the Jodrell Bank Observatory with the help of David Osbadelston from Cornerhouse and Ian Morrison from the University of Manchester. We also invited artist and radioastronomer Gavin Starks, who used to work at Jodrell Bank, to make interviews about the  e-merlin project. I finally edited this video as part of my "Ground Control" project during my ex-stream residency at Hull Time Based Arts.

Open Sky

Leonardo/ISAST and the Paris based @rt Outsiders Festival are pleased to announce that the "Prix Leonardo - @rt Outsiders / Nouveaux Horizons 2003" has been awarded to Ewen Chardronnet and associated arts collective for the work OPEN SKY.
The jury particularly noted the innovation of the work of the Acoustic Space Lab network and the art groups federated around the OPEN SKY project : Rasa Smite, Martins Ratniks, Raitis Smits, Radioqualia and Makrolab.

OPEN SKY is an installation set by Ewen Chardronnet on the conversion of the soviet-era radiotelescope RT32 of Irbene in Latvia in the context of the on-going research projects of the Acoustic Space Lab collective. The RT32 is a 32 meters former espionage antenna converted to radioastronomy and fondamental science. Since 2001, artists, radio-amateurs and scientists work together to explore the tactical and artistic possibilities of the dish.

Signal Sever @ Nuit Blanche Paris 2004

Signal Sever! performance during the Nuit Blanche Paris 2004 (see Signal Sever @ Nuit Blanche 1).
This is an edit of the live camera on stage, used (only the image) for the Atlantic Bird 3 satellite transmission of the performance we did for Art+Communication Festival in Riga and all over Europe.
We booked a satellite van and transmitted more than 1/2 hour the introduction of the concert.

Signal Sever! is the sensor array and sound and video processing unit conceptualized by Projekt Atol - Pact Systems which maps the electromagnetic spectrum, processes, transforms it and sends it back into the ether in many different directions and forms. HF, VHF, UHF, L-band, C-band and Ku-band spectrums are analysed and processed. Satellites are tracked, ground, air and maritime communications and traffic mapped. http://rx-tx.org

Signalsevernuitblanche2004_1 During the period of December 15th 2003 - December 15th 2004, the RIXC, center for new media culture of Riga, together with its' partners (6 co-organisers) organised a "Trans-Cultural Mapping" series of events-in-process throughout the Europe, including its' final presentation during the "Art+Communication: celebrating European Enlargement" in Latvia.

Innovative strategies of collaborative cartography, mapping/positioning technologies (GPS) and mobile networking were used as tools to discover and highlight new dimensions in European cultural map, which has to be draw anew due to the enlargement process of the European Union.
